Why Chico’s Tacos Sparks So Much Debate
Few El Paso restaurants inspire stronger opinions than Chico’s Tacos.
For some, it is an essential tradition—rolled tacos submerged in tomato-based sauce, covered with shredded cheese, and finished with green salsa.
For others, the reaction is simple: What exactly am I eating?
That disagreement is part of what makes Chico’s special.
Founded in El Paso in 1953, Chico’s has become one of the city’s most recognizable food institutions. Its signature tacos don’t fit neatly into any category, and generations of El Pasoans have debated whether they are brilliant, strange—or both.
But Chico’s is about more than food.
For many locals, it represents childhood, family, late nights, high school, weekends with friends, and the familiar taste of home.
Ask El Pasoans about Chico’s and you’ll hear everything from passionate loyalty to complete disbelief.
Perhaps that’s the best evidence of its place in our culture.

Jay Cazares serves as Producer for Rutter Media, developing documentaries, podcasts, digital media, and original storytelling.
A graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Jay brings expertise in television production, cinematography, editing, and visual storytelling, contributing to projects from concept through post-production.
As producer of The Rebound 915 Podcast and Collective Conversations, he works closely with Doug Rutter to create authentic, professional content that preserves history and shares the people and stories that matter.
ANDREW ESPARSA, CREATIVE PRODUCER
Andrew Esparza serves as Creative Producer for Rutter Media, bringing stories and ideas to life through cinematography, photography, graphic design, and digital media.
With a background in television promotions, he blends creative vision and technical skill to produce documentaries, branded content, promotional campaigns, and multimedia storytelling.
He also supports The Rebound 915 Podcast and Collective Conversations by creating photography, graphics, social media content, and other visual assets that enhance each platform.
