CASE STUDY 1

IRS Back Taxes & Wage Garnishment

Context

Following a significant business downturn, a local professional accumulated several years of unpaid federal tax obligations. As penalties and interest continued to accrue, the outstanding balance grew substantially.

After repeated collection notices went unresolved, the IRS initiated a wage garnishment, reducing each paycheck and creating immediate financial hardship. With a large portion of his income being withheld, meeting basic living expenses and supporting his family became increasingly difficult.

Challenge

The situation required immediate intervention. The client had multiple years of unfiled federal income tax returns, significant outstanding tax liabilities, and an active wage garnishment already in effect.

Previous attempts to resolve the matter had stalled because the IRS did not have complete or accurate financial information necessary to evaluate collection alternatives.

Without prompt action, the client faced continued wage levies, escalating penalties and interest, and the possibility of additional enforcement measures.

Our Approach

The Tax Matters team moved quickly to restore the client's compliance and establish a path toward long-term resolution. Our professionals:

  • Prepared and filed all delinquent federal income tax returns.
  • Identified and corrected prior-year filing errors that affected the client's overall tax liability.
  • Compiled a comprehensive financial disclosure package that accurately reflected the client's income, expenses, assets, and ability to pay.
  • Contacted the IRS immediately to request emergency consideration for releasing the active wage garnishment.
  • Negotiated directly with IRS representatives to establish an affordable long-term Installment Agreement based on the client's financial circumstances.
  • Guided the client through every stage of the process to ensure ongoing compliance and prevent future collection actions.

Outcome

Within 24 hours of submitting the necessary documentation and working directly with the IRS, the wage garnishment was released, allowing the client to once again receive his full paycheck.

A sustainable monthly Installment Agreement was approved, eliminating the immediate collection pressure while providing a realistic path to satisfy the outstanding tax debt over time.

Most importantly, the client regained financial stability, avoided additional IRS enforcement actions, and returned to full tax compliance with confidence that the matter had been professionally resolved.
