Don Haskins, affectionately known as “The Bear,” is a legendary figure in college basketball, renowned for his remarkable coaching career at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Over 17 seasons, Haskins consistently led his teams to success, achieving over twenty wins each season and showcasing his exceptional ability to develop competitive athletes.
Haskins gained further recognition as an assistant coach for the 1972 Summer Olympic Basketball team in Munich, playing a vital role in the growth of international basketball. Throughout his illustrious career, he coached numerous players who went on to achieve success in the NBA, including notable all-stars such as Nate Archibald, Tim Hardaway, and Antonio Davis.
With an impressive coaching record of 719 wins to 353 losses, Haskins demonstrated tactical acumen and outstanding leadership skills. His significant contributions to the sport were honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, where he is celebrated as a double inductee, recognizing his influence both as a coach and a pioneer in basketball.
