A hat that was owned and worn by Davis, Jr. It is the same style beaver blend that he wore throughout the film, “The Cannonball Run (1981) as the character “Morris Fenderbaum”. The film is full of hilarious bits surrounding a transcontinental race with a Ferrari (308 GTS). Sammy teamed up with with fellow rat pack member, Dean Martin (“Jamie Blake”) for the shenanigans. Dean and Sammy both dressed as Catholic priests for their ride adding more to the zany aspect.
The hat is decorated with a satin ribbon with bow across the exterior. The interior shows the well known manufacturer, Tryfon Hatters Made by Wade and [size] Long Oval 7-3/8. An inside perforation stamp shows who the hat was made for, “SAMMY DAVIS JR.”. It also has handwritten details (signature of maker – “Hat No. 6 Made for Sammy Davis, Jr. by Wade), date it was made (4/27/82) in marker under the headband.
The hat captures his incredible energy and personality with the same intensity that startled President Richard Nixon during a hug on national TV in the 70’s. Photo style matches are shown with two from the film, “The Cannonball Run”. Another is included showcasing Davis in London during the late part of the Summer in 1982. This of course is shortly after the hat was made.
